Geographers from across the northwest are being called to represent the area in a launch event for an internationally renowned institution for teachers. Cumbria and North Lancashire are about to join over 40 branches of the Geographical Association at a critical time for the subject and profession. Spearheading the move for representation is University of Cumbria’s Simon Carr, Geography lead at the Ambleside campus.

Canoe challenge takes in top mountain pass

A 600km canoe marathon taking in the Irish Sea - and the Lake District’s highest road pass - is about to be undertaken by an outdoor studies lecturer determined to make a point. University of Cumbria’s Richard Ensoll will be setting off on June 22 in an open canoe from Ireland before crossing 200km of tricky water dominated by busy shipping lanes. His journey will also take in Ulverston and involve dragging canoes over Kirkstone Pass on his way to the end at Lazonby near Penrith.

Flood resilience lessons for 400 schoolchildren from across the Lune Valley

Hundreds of pupils are to learn about the risks and dangers of flooding and how they can help build up resilience for the future. The University of Cumbria’s campus in Bowerham Road, Lancaster is hosting an event in partnership with the Lune Valley Flood Forum, welcoming up to 400 pupils from 11 primary schools. Statutory agencies, charities, and nature and wildlife bodies are also taking part in the multi-agency event.

Nearly £2million in National Lottery Heritage Fund grants have been awarded to the University of Cumbria and Cumbria Local Nature Partnership. The university's four-year BOOM project in south Cumbria aims to reintroduce 10 threatened native flora and fauna to Morecambe Bay and is one of two flagship schemes receiving support and aiming to save and protect species on a scale never seen before.
