What is Clearing really like? Hear from our students

Each summer, thousands of students find their place at university through Clearing. For many, it’s a moment filled with uncertainty and big decisions, but it’s also a chance to take control, explore new possibilities, and discover a path that feels right.

When you’ve never been through Clearing before, it’s normal to feel like you’re stepping into the unknown. To help you picture the process, we’ve gathered real stories from students who joined the University of Cumbria through Clearing.

They’ve been exactly where you might be now, and their experiences show that Clearing isn’t something to fear. In fact, it can be a turning point that leads you to the right course, the right campus, and the right community.

Applying through Clearing when you don't achieve your predicted grades

Not getting the grades you expected on results day can be disheartening, but it’s also one of the most common reasons students turn to Clearing. Many people worry that their university plans are suddenly out of reach when they don’t get into their firm or insurance choices, but Clearing provides a second chance to explore new options and secure a place that genuinely suits you.

Cheryl, BSc (Hons) Diagnostic Radiography

“Applying through Clearing was a last-minute decision because I didn’t achieve the grades I had hoped for on results day. Luckily, I already had a good understanding of how Clearing worked since we covered it during college, and I had researched it myself as a backup plan in case things didn’t go as expected.

“On results day, I had a list of universities I was interested in and used my laptop and phone to call them one by one. It was a mix of emotions – I was upset about my grades, nervous about making those calls, and anxious about whether any university would accept me. But I would definitely recommend applying through Clearing to others.”

“At the University of Cumbria, I appreciate the small, tight-knit community where everyone is friendly and willing to support one another. What I enjoy most about my course is the perfect balance between learning practical skills and understanding the science behind them, especially anatomy. Having placements where I can apply and improve these skills has been invaluable.”

Applying through Clearing when you've had a change of heart

Sometimes, the course or university you originally chose just doesn’t feel right anymore, and that’s okay. Clearing isn’t only for those who don't get their predicted grades; it’s also a route for anyone who is rethinking their plans or looking for a better fit. Whatever your reason, Clearing gives you the flexibility to explore new opportunities quickly and speak directly to universities about the right path for you.

Aidan, BA (Hons) Fine Art

“I had gone to a different university the previous year and felt it was the wrong decision, so the choice to come to the University of Cumbria was incredibly last-minute.

“My Clearing experience was straightforward, and I felt fully supported by the amazing faculty. I applied initially via phone call and the whole experience was honestly so simple and easy.”

Applying to university for the first time in Clearing

Not everyone follows the traditional application timeline. Some students decide later in the year that they’re ready for university, discover a course they hadn’t considered before, or simply feel more confident applying once they have their results.

Clearing provides a streamlined way to apply to university for the first time, with dedicated support teams on hand to guide you through each step. Even if you’re applying at the last minute, there are still plenty of opportunities to find the right course and settle into university life.

Lloyd, BA (Hons) Wildlife Media

“To apply, I phoned the hotline and received guidance on the next steps. My main concern was that applying so late might prevent me from getting a place. However, I felt very supported throughout the Clearing process, as all the hotline and university staff were friendly and helpful.”

“University life has been amazing! I have met so many great people, both older and younger than me, and I have a great friend group and live with many people I am close with. I’ve had the chance to go to the Lake District almost weekly and spend lots of time doing my hobbies as they link in well with the course.”
