Media Arts and Performing Arts at the University of Cumbria

The University of Cumbria’s Brampton Road campus in Carlisle is the creative home of our Institute of the Arts. This is a special place for the study, practice, and enjoyment of arts and culture, and it has been so since the Carlisle College of Art first opened on this site in 1950.

The Institute of the Arts offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes in an array of artistic disciplines, from Perfoming Arts and Creative Writing to Art & Design and Film & TV, including Dance, Musical Theatre, Game Design, and Wildlife Media, along with excellent facilities and resources to support these activities.

Learning for a Career

Our courses are heavily practical and our focus is to put our students in touch with agencies, commissioners, publications, and industry leaders so that they leave their degree with solid industry connections and a great understanding of working in the arts as a career.

Our former students have gone on to achieve great things and our Alumni include Turner Prize winners, Oscar winners, Pixar animators, Disney designers, and Bollywood producers as well as an array of professional artists and owners of businesses that support the art industry or use the Arts to change and improve lives.

Our Institute of the Arts benefits from a range of strategic art partnerships and not only takes part in several national and local art events throughout the year but also organizes and hosts auditioning exhibitions and performances with industry influencers, so they are fully aware of the talent graduating from the University of Cumbria.

Studying here also means being enriched by all that arts and culture have to offer, as you rub shoulders with over 1,000 like-minded artists and creatives studying an array of artistic disciplines. It’s a great opportunity for building lasting friendships and working on collaborative projects.
