When setting up and maintaining your profile, you may like to reflect on how well it represents you and your research, as well as the outputs and impact of that research.

Accurately attributing works to researchers is a common problem. Multiple researchers have the same name, names can be mis-spelled, and individuals may use several variations of their name or change their name. ORCiD (Open Researcher and Contributor ID) addresses this problem by allocating a unique identifier to every researcher who registers for one.

The University strongly recommends all academic staff and postgraduate research students to register for an ORCiD.

Creating an ORCiD ID and linking it to Pure

A range of content types can be added to Pure using the built-in system templates, and related content can be linked. For example, an event or dataset record may relate to a research output. Within Pure, a relationship can be created to link these different output types.

The guidance documents below cover the content types that can currently be added to the University’s Pure system. The system is still being configured, so watch out for further types as they are added over the coming months.

The University of Cumbria’s Pure system has been linked to external bibliometric databases so, rather than using a template, metadata for published research outputs can be imported from an online source such as Web of Science or PubMed. Research output metadata can also be imported from a text file.

In some cases, you may find that a record already exists in Pure for your research output. This may happen if a co-author at the University has already added it. You can request to be added to this existing record by claiming the record in Pure.

Pure sources data from several other systems, some belonging to the University of Cumbria (e.g. ResourceLink) and some external (e.g. Web of Science), ensuring that information is consistent across systems and only needs to be collected once. This means that missing or incorrect details should be corrected in the source system rather than in Pure itself. In most cases, this information can not be edited in Pure; however, where this is possible, it should not be as this can cause errors next time the systems sync.

Personal details (wrong name, job title, department affiliation, etc.)

Most of this information is sourced from the HR system (ResourceLink). Please contact People & Culture with queries.

Supervisory details (missing students, incorrect start dates, etc.)

Postgraduate research student data is added to Pure by the Graduate School. Please contact the Graduate School with queries.

Research outputs (incorrectly assigned outputs, record created with the wrong sub-type)

You may find some research outputs in Pure that list you as an author, although you are not an author of that output. This can happen when another user is importing their publications from an external source and does not rigorously check that all co-authors are recorded with correct affiliations. Consequently, if you share a surname with another author, you will be listed instead of them, even if your first names are different.

Research output records may also occasionally be created with an incorrect sub-type. For example, 'Contribution to journal > Article' rather than 'Contribution to journal > Editorial’.
