Second-year Business Management student Tayler-J has big ambitions for the future. He hopes to start his own consultancy firm, and his studies at the University of Cumbria are giving him the foundations to succeed. In this story, Tayler-J shares what he enjoys most about his course and gives us a look at life beyond the classroom.

Why did you choose to study Business Management?

I have always been fascinated by the ever-changing environment of the business world. I am driven by the idea of running my own business and working alongside other organisations to achieve success. That’s why I chose Business Management – to put myself in the best possible position to make the most of opportunities to build connections in the industry.

Why did you choose the University of Cumbria?

My choice to study at the University of Cumbria in Lancaster was not long or drawn out. I applied through Clearing after finishing college, and it was a very simple and effective process. Everyone I spoke to was extremely helpful and excited to welcome me to the university.

The landscapes and surrounding areas of the university are exactly what I wanted for my studies. The Lake District and the Peak District are both close by, creating perfect opportunities for extracurricular activities such as hiking.

What do you enjoy most about your course?

The area of business management that I have enjoyed the most is the accounting modules included in both Simulate and Operate during my first year.

The Law segment in my first year was also very interesting and has continued to inform my work. I still study and refer to contract law when investigating variations in business practice.

I also enjoy the wide variety of ways that we are assessed on the course, including exams, reports and reflective essays. These methods have allowed me to develop a wide skillset, helping me to learn different writing styles and reference systems.

How have your tutors supported you during your studies?

My tutors are really supportive, encouraging me to attend extracurricular activities and pushing me forward with my professional career.

What have been your favourite experiences at Cumbria?

My favourite experiences at university have to be the social aspects; bonding with my course mates, housemates, and other students at the university. Group work during course assessments has been a great way for us as a cohort to really bond and understand how each of us learns and develops.

Living in halls has made me more independent and has given me the experience of living on my own for the first time. I’ve had to properly plan out my own time and work out a budget for my expenses.

What would your top tips be for someone hoping to study Business Management?

All I can say is to fully engage and embrace the different aspects of your course. Really get to know your course mates, ask your tutors all the questions, and engage with the resources you have been given. They are all very helpful and will help prepare you for your future studies and career in the working world.

Is there anything else you’d like to add?

Studying at Cumbria is a very unique and different experience from other universities in the country. If you want a more traditional university experience with thousands of students in a lecture theatre, then Cumbria is not for you. The campuses spread around Cumbria are smaller than other universities, but you create bonds with your fellow students and tutors that will last a lifetime.
