Why did you choose to study your course – what or who inspired you?

I’m studying LLB (Hons) Law and I’m in my second year at university.

My aspiration to study Law stems from deeply personal experiences. As a care leaver, I’ve long felt a strong desire to advocate for children who face circumstances similar to my own. Law plays a vital role in shaping and protecting society; without it, order would quickly unravel. This fundamental truth has always fascinated me, and I’ve often found myself wondering how laws are created, interpreted, and enforced.

Why did you choose the University of Cumbria over other universities?

I chose the University of Cumbria because it feels like home. Ever since moving here before secondary school, I’ve been captivated by the area’s natural beauty. Staying close to the landscapes I love was important to me, but equally important was the Law programme itself. What stood out was the variety of assessment methods, which I believed would keep the learning process engaging and dynamic. I was particularly drawn to the Family Law module, especially the opportunity to choose your essay titles, and being able to explore topics that have an emotive aspect to me felt really meaningful and motivating.

What challenges have you faced and how have you overcome them?

Some topics can be quite complex and content-heavy, but that’s to be expected with a Law degree. I’ve been able to overcome any challenges that have come my way thanks to the support and guidance of my tutors, as well as the encouragement from my peers.

How have your tutors supported you during your studies?

One of the best things about being a Law student at the University of Cumbria is the strong connection you build with your tutors. Because the class sizes are smaller, you’re treated as an individual, not just another face in the crowd and your strengths are genuinely recognised. The lecturers are always eager to help, whether you're struggling to understand a topic or just need a bit of extra support. That kind of personal attention and encouragement stood out to me and played a big part in my decision to study here.

How is university life beyond your studies?

I'm an active member of the Law Society, where I help organise both academic and social events, everything from Solicitor Crash Course webinars to our annual Law Ball. It’s a fantastic way to connect with others on the course and get involved outside of lectures. If you're thinking about studying Law, I’d definitely recommend attending these events or joining the society yourself. The Law Ball is a brilliant way to celebrate the year’s achievements and also doubles as a great opportunity to network with professionals.

CPearson,

What would be your top tips for people thinking of doing the same course as you?

If you’re passionate about law, my advice is simple: go for it. It’s an incredible degree to pursue, and if you’re aiming to become a solicitor or barrister, it provides a strong foundation in law and the legal system. This solid base will give you a head start when preparing for your SQE or BAR exams. But may I add, learning criminal law may be the best thing you do in this course!

What advice or guidance do you have for people thinking about applying for university?

It's completely okay if you’re not sure what you want to do yet; don’t let anyone tell you different! I didn’t figure it out until a year after I left my Health and Social Care course at college. Deciding what you want to do for the rest of your life can be tough, especially if you’re considering pursuing a career related to your degree. Take your time to really think it through before making your final decision. As long as you’re dedicated and have a genuine interest, everything else will fall into place.

What are your plans for the future, and how is your course preparing you for your potential career?

My goal for the future is to become a family law solicitor, and I’m committed to staying focused on that path. This course is equipping me with the legal knowledge I need to achieve my aspirations and is providing a strong foundation as I prepare for the SQE.

What’s been the highlight of your time at university so far?

The highlight of my time at university has definitely been the amazing friends I’ve made along the way! I’m so grateful to be sharing this journey with such incredible people, it really makes it easier. As for the course, while my passion is in family law, I’ve found criminal law to be the most fascinating subject I’ve ever studied. I’m genuinely shocked by how some laws surrounding crime are governed, it’s been eye-opening.
