Course Overview

This skills bootcamp gives you the groundwork to begin your journey in the world of UI & UX, developing an understanding in how to plan, design, test and deliver a range of digital solutions.

Suitable for people with or without design experience, this short course is designed to help your build knowledge and experience for professional development or a new career path.

It will conclude on campus with a project review and information on career development.

If you are 19 or over, living and working in Cumbria and have your employer’s support to develop your Digital UX/UI Skills, this 15-week course is for you. Skills Bootcamps are part of The Government’s Lifetime Skills Guarantee helping everyone gain skills for life. They are subsidised by the Department for Education and are available to employed or self-employed people living and/or working in Cumbria. Additional eligibility criteria apply.

On this course you will...

  • Consider how design decisions are made
  • Explore UX and UI design
  • Learn how to find and research design, learn how to work independently and within a design team and learn to visualise your project – wireframes and prototypes.
  • Building the model – graphic design techniques
  • Judging success – usability testing and evaluation
  • On campus workshop exploring solutions, considering the impact of AI

Course Structure

What you will learn

The programme is delivered over a 15-week continuous period, based on online delivery, self-directed learning, and on-campus attendance in Carlisle.

Modules
  • Week One On campus day in Carlisle (all day)
    Introduction to the course, the medium, the delivery team and each other. (This session will also get you access to all the accounts and software required)
  • Week Two Daytime Online Session (3.5 Hours)
    Introduction to UI & Digital Design
  • Week Three Daytime Online Session (3.5 Hours)
    Introduction to UX and Research
  • Week Four Daytime Online Session (3.5 Hours)
    Hands-on software and tool tutorial
  • Week Five On campus in Carlisle (all day)
    New Year project kick-off.

    Using the knowledge from previous sessions to launch the development of each student’s individual outcomes from the Bootcamp
  • Week Six Daytime Online Session (3.5 Hours)
    Project development session.

    Students can work on their projects with on-hand support from the tutor
  • Week Seven Daytime Online Session (3.5 Hours)
    Project development session.

    Students can work on their projects with on-hand support from the tutor
  • Week 8 On campus day in Carlisle (all day)
    Course halfway point presentations

    Students display their projects and ideas to the group with a tutor lead lecture on ideation and critique
  • Week 9 Daytime online session (3.5 hours)
    Online individual feedback sessions (1:2:1)

    1:2:1 Feedback sessions lead by tutor with students working independently
  • Week 10 Daytime online session (3.5 hours)
    Online individual feedback sessions (1:2:1)

    1:2:1 Feedback sessions lead by tutor with students working independently
  • Week 11 Daytime online session (3.5 hours)
    Project development session

    Students can work on their projects with on-hand support from the tutor.
  • Week 12 Daytime online session (3.5 hours)
    Project development session

    Students can work on their projects with on-hand support from the tutor.
  • Week 13 Daytime online session (3.5 hours)
    Project development session

    Students can work on their projects with on-hand support from the tutor.
  • Week 14 Daytime online session (3.5 hours)
    Presentation preparation and project development

    Students give a quick overview of their project before the final presentation the following week, continue to work on project with tutor support.
  • Week 15 On campus day in Carlisle (all day)
    Presentation of final outcomes from the students

    Students display their projects and ideas to the group with a tutor lead lecture on ideation and critique, with final development session in the morning.
