Kira Welland, Doctoral Researcher
Kira Welland's programme of doctoral study explores: ‘The spatial contexts of Rydal Mount and how these influence the writings of Mary, Dorothy, and Dora Wordsworth’.
William Wordsworth lived at Rydal Mount Rydal Mount | Rydal Mount & Gardens in England from 1813 until his death in 1850 and his sister and wife remained there until their deaths in 1855 and 1859 respectively. Descendents of the Wordsworth family still own the property, which is now open to the public and a key cultural heritage site within the Lake District.
Kira’s research will contribute to understanding of the Lake District’s Cultural Landscape by highlighting Rydal Mount’s importance in terms of the region’s literary heritage but also by focusing on the writings of female members of the Wordsworth family.
Prior to commencing this work, Kira graduated from the University of Cumbria’s MA Literature, Romanticism, and the English Lake District course. During here MA studies, Kira spent time working at and studying the architectural history of Rydal Mount, and this prior research informs her doctoral project.
