Top Tips for submitting an Arts portfolio

Top Tips for submitting an Arts portfolio

If you're applying to our Fine Art, Graphic Design, Illustration, Photography or Wildlife Media courses, your portfolio is your opportunity to showcase what makes you unique. More than just a collection of work, it offers insight into your artistic skills, ideas, individuality and passion for your chosen subject.

Putting together a strong portfolio can feel daunting, but we're here to support you. Our guide will walk you through the process, offering practical advice and tips to help you present your work with confidence and make the best possible impression.

Review the university’s guidelines

Before you start assembling your portfolio, carefully read any guidance provided by the Admissions team or a course academic. Each course may have specific requirements regarding what should be included, how many pieces to submit, and how to present your work. Understanding these expectations from the beginning will ensure your submission meets the necessary criteria.

Focus on quality over quantity

It’s better to include a carefully curated selection of high-quality pieces rather than overwhelming reviewers with too much work. Aim to showcase a variety of pieces that highlight your:

  • Artistic skills and technical abilities
  • Creativity and unique style
  • Versatility across different mediums (if applicable)

Select works that best represent your strengths and align with the course you’re applying for.

Showcase your creative process

Reviewers are also interested in seeing how you develop your ideas, not just the final outcomes. Consider including:

  • Sketches and drawings
  • Research notes
  • Developmental work
  • Case studies or concept explorations

These elements provide insight into your thought process and artistic journey, making your portfolio more engaging and informative.

Prepare a supporting statement

Alongside your portfolio, you may wish to include or prepare a short, written statement describing your work. This statement should:

  • Provide context for the pieces you’ve included
  • Explain your artistic influences and inspirations
  • Highlight why you chose these specific works for submission

A well-written statement will help the admissions team understand your artistic vision and motivation. Even if you are not required to submit a statement, it can be a very useful tool to help inform your discussion with course academics during your interview.

Follow submission instructions carefully

Once your portfolio is complete, ensure you follow the submission guidelines precisely. This may include:

  • Formatting your portfolio correctly (e.g. digital file type, size restrictions)
  • Naming your files appropriately
  • Submitting your work through the correct platform or email address

Failing to adhere to the instructions could result in delays or issues with your application – so check your submission instructions very carefully.

Show Us What You Can Do

Above all, let your personality and passion shine through. We're interested not only in what you've created, but how you think, experiment and develop ideas. A strong portfolio tells the story of your creative journey and gives us a glimpse of where it could take you next. We look forward to seeing what you've been working on!
