On successful completion, you will be able to:

  1. Develop knowledge and critical understanding of theories and frameworks of decision-making that will support clinical practice
  2. Evaluate your own knowledge and skills in the management of uncertainty in the assessment and management of care with consideration towards human factors, professional and ethical issues and the implications of bias
  3. Critically evaluate ways in which evidenced based practice will support clinical decision-making
  4. Critically analyse how learning from this module may transform your understanding of your practice.

The module explores the application of theories and frameworks to clinical decision making in practice, with consideration towards the principles of critical thinking, management of uncertainty and application of evidence-based reasoning. Teaching staff will determine the topics which may change over the duration of the module due to the dynamic nature of emergency care.

The module will ask you to demonstrate a rigorous, critical analysis of the models and frameworks associated with decision making while evaluating and synthesising the development of your own professional practice through reasoning and reflection. As a result, you will develop your self-awareness on human factors, professional and ethical issues and bias related to patient contact.

To aid in the development of an independent practitioner, the module will request you to discriminate and justify key issues of clinical decision making and synthesise compelling conclusions to discussions.

During the module you will complete assigned asynchronous formative tasks designed to encourage learning and development of practice. Feedback from the tasks will support the development of your final summative written assignment.

To be eligible to study this module, you must be working in an appropriate healthcare environment. To be eligible to study this module, you must demonstrate the ability to study at this level and commit to attempting the assessment. When taken as part of a specific named award, the module content and assessment must be focussed towards the subject of that award. Students who successfully complete this module as a stand-alone module will be eligible for a University transcript of credit.
