Acute Care: Initial Assessment and Management of the Acutely Ill Adult cover image

On successful completion, you will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate an in-depth knowledge and understanding of acute complex presentations in adults identifying red flag symptoms and underlying pathophysiology
  2. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the skills required to perform a primary and secondary health assessment on the acutely ill adult
  3. Critically evaluate appropriate tools, investigations and evidence base which assists with the diagnostic process
  4. Critically analyse how learning from this module may transform your understanding of your practice.
  • Physical assessment strategies, primary and secondary survey models
  • Tools and investigations used to recognise and monitor the acutely ill adult
  • The module will enable you to explore acute complex presentations involving major body systems including cardiovascular, neurological, respiratory, abdominal and renal.

How you will be assessed

Formative assessment:

Participation in online learning activities linked to the module learning outcomes and summative assessment.

Summative assessment:

Written assignment, a portfolio of case studies and reflective content to underpin the course learning outcomes.

Only qualified healthcare professionals will be eligible to study this module. Students must have been working in an acute care environment with at least 6 months experience of assessing and managing acutely ill adults.

You must demonstrate the ability to study at this level and commit to attempting the assessment.

If you have studied the equivalent module at Level 6 then you cannot also study this Level 7 version. Students who successfully complete this module as a stand-alone module will be eligible for a university transcript of credit.
