Top-Up Degrees

Although some students choose to complete their top-up degree full-time on campus, many universities now offer part-time courses and more flexible modes of study, such as blended or distance learning. These options give you the freedom to study in your own way.  

Studying a top-up degree full-time normally takes around one year, with part-time courses taking up to two years. Be sure to check our course pages before you apply to see the modes of study available to you. 

A top-up degree is a great way to build on your existing qualifications and achieve a full bachelor’s degree. It can also open doors to postgraduate study and graduate schemes.

Entry requirements for top-up degrees vary depending on the university you apply to. However, most will ask that you have completed a relevant two-year qualification, such as an HND or Foundation Degree, in the area that you’re looking to study. International equivalents, such as Advanced or Higher Diplomas or Associate Degrees, may also be accepted.  

You can fund your top-up degree in the same way as you would any other undergraduate degree. Depending on where you study, you may also be eligible for scholarships, bursaries or grants. Check with the university before you apply to learn what you may be entitled to.  

Your top-up degree will be awarded by the University of Cumbria and is recognised in the same way that traditional undergraduate degrees are. You’ll enjoy full access to the same services and facilities as any other University of Cumbria student or graduate.  

Upon completion of your studies, you’ll celebrate your achievement at a graduation ceremony in Carlisle Cathedral.
