On successful completion, you will be able to:

1. Demonstrate a critical understanding of a range of mental health disorders in the perinatal period, and their potential impact on the mother, infant and family

2. Critically explore safeguarding, legal, and ethical issues related to perinatal mental health

3. Critically evaluate a range of treatments and support available for women and families in relation to perinatal and infant mental health, including collaborative working within multidisciplinary teams

4. Critically analyse how learning from this module may transform your understanding of your practice.

  • Maternal-Critical examination of maternal perinatal mental health and its impact in the antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods, including existing and new manifestations.
  • Understanding key mental health disorders and how they impact pregnancy.
  • Evaluation of mental health and a critical understanding of referral pathways.
  • Critical understanding of the importance of antenatal education to aid the transition to parenthood.
  • In depth understanding of the risks associated with mental illness in regard to suicide and safeguarding.
  • Knowledge of key policies and their impact.
  • Knowledge of birth trauma, tokophobia and their effect on maternal-infant attachment.
  • Critical evaluation of the impact of partner mental health.
  • Critically appraise your role as a midwife in relation to PIMH.
  • Infant-The physiology and biochemistry of brain development and how emotions are regulated and learnt in infants.
  • How parental mental illness can affect the child across the life course.
  • Infant social, emotional and communicative development.
  • The importance of the parent-infant relationship and how previous trauma may impact on this (Ghosts in the Nursery).
  • Recognising ineffective attachment and bonding, understanding how to support sensitive parenting.
