Module - Critical Perspectives on Infant Feeding HCPD7292

To enable you to critically engage with the complex issues of infant feeding, and infant feeding practices, within diverse cultural and societal frameworks. To explore and critique the nutritional needs of babies, the biology of human milk, and the protection, promotion and support of breastfeeding and human milk feeding.

On successful completion, you will be able to:  

  • Critically explore socio-cultural influences on infant feeding practices  
  • Demonstrate detailed understanding of the nutritional needs of infants, and the biology of human milk and human milk substitutes  
  • Critically analyse approaches to promote and protect the health and wellbeing of infants through infant feeding practices 
  • Critically analyse how learning from this module may transform your understanding of your practice. 

 

  • The role of health professionals and peers in infant feeding support;
  • Social and cultural influences on infant feeding and infant feeding practices;
  • Contextual analysis of infant feeding and infant feeding practices locally, nationally and internationally;
  • Approaches to promote and protect breastfeeding;
  • Baby Friendly Initiative principles and their application to practice;
  • International Code for Breastmilk Substitutes;
  • The nutritional needs of infants; the biology and constituents of human milk and human milk substitutes;
  • Strategic planning and management in relation to infant feeding;
  • Critical evaluation and synthesis of the evidence in relation to infant feeding and infant feeding practices;
  • Reflective practice.
