BEng (Hons) - Mechanical Engineering
Gain the knowledge, creativity and problem-solving skills to make an impact designing advanced technologies and tackling real-world challenges. Our BEng (Hons) Mechanical Engineering degree is an exciting and forward-looking course that combines technical expertise with practical application.
Our hands-on, industry-led programmes are built in collaboration with employers to ensure graduates are truly work-ready. You’ll learn from both academics and practising engineers, applying theory to real-world projects and gaining insights directly from professionals working at the forefront of engineering innovation.
You will explore mechanics, materials science, and thermodynamics, as well as core themes in fluid mechanics, control systems, and advanced manufacturing techniques. The course also includes training in computer-aided design (CAD) and cutting-edge manufacturing technologies like 3D printing and robotics.
Scholarships are available for this course; The Future Talent Award and the Defence STEM Undergraduate Scheme (DSUS) for eligible full-time Mechanical Engineering undergraduate programmes. Students must prove UK Nationality and meet required security clearance assessment. Both scholarships provide funding, paid work experience and clear progression pathways into careers.
Our Mechanical Engineering course is taught at our brand-new Barrow campus, a purpose-built facility equipped with the latest engineering resources and technology.
Course Overview
In your first year, you’ll focus on becoming an independent learner while building a strong foundation in engineering principles, mathematics, and design. You’ll learn to create and test engineering artefacts, explore materials and manufacturing processes, and gain essential knowledge of electrical and mechanical mechatronic principles.
In your second year, you’ll tackle more broadly defined challenges that require integrating knowledge from across your studies. You will deepen your understanding of applied mechatronics, materials and manufacturing, and digital manufacturing, while developing advanced modelling and simulation skills. Team-based projects will give you the opportunity to solve real-world engineering problems in a simulated professional environment.
In your final year, you will master complex engineering problems and explore advanced topics such as manufacturing systems, instrumentation and control, and cutting-edge materials technologies. You will also undertake a substantial independent engineering project, applying your skills creatively to deliver solutions with real-world impact.
