Entry Requirements Programme Specification

If you’re planning for a future career in either law or criminal justice, our degree is a great springboard into a variety of professions or training courses.

You'll study issues of crime and the justice system, learn about the rules and policy of criminal law in a number of areas, such as homicide, sexual and violent crime, to help you think about where you want your specialities to lie.

Why Choose University of Cumbria

You’ll learn about crime and criminal behaviour and explore how the criminal justice system works. But, by coupling this with law, you’ll learn how to apply criminal law – a great taster if you want to go onto further study and practice in criminal law or the wider justice system.

Not having a law degree is no barrier to becoming a lawyer, because on completion this course, you’ll be well placed to continue your studies to the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL). It will be your passport to study professional courses that law graduates must take before commencing a training contract at a law firm or pupillage at a barristers’ chambers.

  • We are ranked third law school in the United Kingdom for student satisfaction and tutor feedback (2019 Guardian League Table)
  • Opportunities to use your academic skills practically via our Street Law project, in which you research and advise on real legal issues to clients
  • Take part in competitive mooting, both in-house and nationally
  • Opportunity to participate in client interviewing competitions – boosting your CV
  • Placements to give you work-based learning opportunities
  • Taught by tutors who have first-hand experience working in the field
  • Small class sizes mean we get to know you as an individual to give you personalised support
  • Your learning will be current because we constantly evolve our course to reflect new forms of crime and the challenges they present to the criminal justice system and law enforcement agencies
  • Through our Personal Development Planning you’ll develop employability skills, including support in CV writing

You’ll study in Carlisle, only 20 minutes from Scotland in one direction and the stunning Lake District National Park – now a UNESCO World Heritage site -  in the other, so you’ll never be stuck for something to do outside of your studies

We have excellent links with local legal service providers and a strong working relationship with Police, Solicitors Regulator Authority, the British Psychological Society, Law Society and a number of voluntary and commercial organisations, which will give you vital professional insights and good placement prospects.

So, for a current criminology degree combined with law to give your career a kick-start, look no further.

Many of our full-time programmes can be studied over a longer period on a part-time basis. Please contact the course enquiries team for further details.
